Old-world craftsmanship & advanced technology
Since 1974, Hugh Lofting Timber Framing & High Performance Building has crafted timber frame homes and structures throughout the U.S. Our shop in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, sits in the heart of Chester County, surrounded by historic houses and barns. We are inspired by our regional history and the traditions of timber framing, but we remain focused on the future.
Environmental responsibility, community involvement, and good stewardship are the standards by which we judge our work and our business. By incorporating advanced technology with old-world technique, we remain dedicated to hand crafting energy efficient homes and structures that are elegant and distinctive. One at a time.
Proud. Proactive. Professional.
Founder Hugh Lofting joined a small group of woodworkers responsible for reviving timber framing in the 1970s. He explored concepts in passive house design and timber construction throughout New England, and traveled abroad to enhance his knowledge. Today, we are proud to be recognized as leading timber framers with a reputation for excellent client satisfaction and environmental responsibility.
Hugh’s passion for the art and execution of timber framing is contagious, and the team that works alongside him shares first-hand construction experience and a dedication to craft and service. In recent years, we expanded the business to include construction of all types of high performance buildings – from certified LEED commercial buildings to certified passive houses.
We work collaboratively with homeowners, architects, designers, and builders. We can design, engineer, and construct your project as a general contractor, provide comprehensive construction management, or work with the professionals you’ve chosen. In all cases, we bring enthusiasm, creativity, and quality to every project.
Hugh Lofting maintains active involvement in the U.S. Green Building Council and its local chapters; the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia; and the Southern Chester County (Pennsylvania) Chamber of Commerce. We maintain certifications from Passive House Institute U.S. (PHIUS) and Forest Stewardship Council®. As a certified B Corporation, we are proud to be part of a growing network redefining business according to sustainable and beneficial best practices.
