Phoenixville YMCA
Phoenixville, Pennsylvania
The Phoenixville YMCA needed to expand its facility to accommodate growth but at the same time wanted to create a beautiful space that lent itself to a variety of public and YMCA-specific activities.
The architect envisioned an open entry area that brought the outdoors in with massive tree-like timber-frame trusses and vast expanses of glass. The upper level running track was designed to give athletes the feeling of running through tree branches.
Hugh Lofting assembled and raised the five main trusses and two small entry “tree” trusses and installed 19,000 square feet of laminated yellow pine decking over the trusses. Undadilla Laminated Products manufactured the curved segments of glued-laminated southern yellow pine.
