Catskills Timber Frame House
Catskills, New York
This family vacation home in upstate New York incorporates kiln-dried Douglas Fir timber framing stained with Land Ark natural wood finish. The sustainable architecture includes a series of volumes with standing-seam metal roofs, photovoltaic panels, radiant floor heating, and recycled construction materials. The contemporary home features a continuous south-facing glass wall, which frames the gorgeous mountaintop views.
Our timber-framing crew assembled the framework on the ground and flew the pre-assembled roof trusses and bents into place with a crane. Bay girts were placed with the help of a lift. After raising the super structure, the crew set the roof purlins, which span between the bents. Roof decking of 1×10 Eastern White Pine, left unfinished at the client’s request, contrasts and highlights the Douglas Fir frame. The timber frame provides structure for the super-insulated SIP building shell. Roof SIPs have an R-40 insulating value and the wall SIPs provide an R-26 insulating value.
